Charles Barkley: ‘If you’re Portland, you’ve just got to forget about the game’

Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Ernie Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal discussed Portland’s lopsided 116-92 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals. Barkley, who apparently picked the Trail Blazers to win the series prior to the start of the game, offered some advice on what the Trail Blazers should go as they begin preparing for Game 2 on Thursday.

“I think if you’re Portland, you’ve just got to forget about the game,” said Barkley. “There was nothing positive happened to the Trail Blazers tonight.”

Probably good advice for Trail Blazers fans, as well.

Barkely noted that the Trail Blazers, a team playing in the second-round for the first time in 14 years, might not have been ready for the change of intensity, but that there’s no reason they can’t change that in Game 2.

“The Spurs just jumped on them,” said Barkley. “They got hit in the mouth and they backed up the entire game. The Trail Blazers played like they were still in the first-round. The deeper you go in the playoffs, you’re playing against better teams and the intensity has to rise. So if I’m the Trail Blazers I say ‘We got our butt kicked, plain and simple.’ But one game to the next does not matter NBA playoffs.”
